Tigerair (formerly Tiger Airways ) was a low-cost airline from Singapore based at Singapore Airport . It was a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines . Its former sister company Tigerair Australia is now part of Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. and in addition to destinations in Australia, it also heads for Ngurah Rai Airport in Indonesia.

history

Tigerair was founded on December 12, 2003 under the name Tiger Airways and began flight operations in September 2004. Like its sister company Tiger Airways Australia , it was 100% owned by the Tiger Aviation Group holding .

The largest shareholder was Singapore Airlines with almost 33% . Ryanair's founder Tony Ryan held 16% through the holding company Irlandia Investment, while Bill Franke held a further 24% through Indigo Partners LLC. Temasek Holdings held shares of 11%. Tigerair was the first airline to move into the budget terminal at Changi International Airport in Singapore.

In August 2010 the creation of a new low cost airline called Thai Tiger was announced. The joint venture between Thai Airways International and Tigerair should start operations in early 2011. On September 17, 2011 it was announced that Thai Airways had given up the joint venture with Tiger Airways.

In July 2013 Tiger Airways was given its new name Tigerair , with which a new corporate design was also introduced.

Together with China Airlines , Tigerair Holdings founded the Tigerair Taiwan joint venture in December 2013 ; the first flight was from Taipei to Singapore on September 24, 2014 .

As of July 2017, Singapore Airlines merges its two subsidiaries Scoot and Tigerair, with the Tigerair brand disappearing completely, only the IATA code TR is taken over as such by the new subsidiary. By mid-2018, all aircraft should be repainted to match the scooter paint scheme.
