Ligao

Ligao (officially: City of Ligao , Filipino : Lungsod ng Ligao ) is a Philippine city in the Albay Province . It has 111,399 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census). The inhabitants call themselves Ligaoeños. Parts of the Mayon Volcano National Park are on the municipal area. There is a regular rail link between Manila and Ligao City, operated by the Philippine National Railways .

history

The name Ligao is derived from the word ticau from the local language for a tree that was once common, the poisonous leaves of which were used for fishing in the rivers and streams. Most Ligaoeños assume, however, that the name was derived from the word licau , which means something like “take a detour” or “ deviate from the regular route”.

Ligao originated in the 16th century as a small settlement with the name Cavasi . The population grew due to immigration from the surrounding settlements. As a result, power struggles arose between ambitious and aggressive leaders who divided the settlement. Five parts emerged which were led by the maginous (chiefs). The names of the chiefs were Pagkilatan, Maaban, Sampoñgan, Makabongay and Hokoman. Peace could only be restored when the chief Pagkilatan, with the consent of the other chiefs, was appointed supreme leader of the entire settlement.

The place was founded in 1606 as a barrio of Polangui . In 1665 Ligao came to the administrative area of Oas and in 1666 finally became an independent municipality.
