Daraga

Daraga is a township in the Albay Province of the Philippines that is home to numerous wealthy families. The population in 2000, according to the National Statistics Office of the Philippines, was approximately 128,423. The word "Daraga" means "Unmarried Young Woman" and, according to a legend, comes from the name of a tree that only grew on a special hill and in which the Baroque church "Our Lady of the Gate Parish", built in 1773 today, stands. Daraga Municipality is also known as the " City of Smiles ".

history

According to legend, the word Daraga (with an accent on the last syllable) refers to a kind of tree that grew in abundance, especially on the top of a hill, where today the famous baroque church "Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church" stands; it is a National Cultural Treasure . During the 12th century, most of the migrants are traders and settlers. When the Spaniards came to the village under the direction of Juan de Salcedo , they named it Budiao, later Cagsawa. In 1587 the evangelization of the place and improvements were made by the Franciscan missionaries. In 1595 Cagsawa was raised to the category of "visita" and was attached to the city of Camalig . Alfonso de Jadraque was the first pastor of Cagsawa. On June 12, 1872, the Spanish governor General Simon de Anda Cagsawa took over and gave the settlement the name Salcedo which was later renamed Daraga. In 1815 a government was organized for the city and appointed the first official captain named Venancio Espiritu Salomon. Under the Becerra Act of 1892, Daraga became a part of Legazpi City. In 1922, Daraga regained its autonomy which was enacted by a Philippine People's Assembly on December 15, 1948 through Republic Act 306.

Daraga was reassigned as a district of Legazpi City. On June 8, 1954, Daraga was repealed by Republic Act No. 993 a parish. In 1959 the name Daraga was changed to Locsin. On June 17, 1967, under Republic Act 4994, the name Daraga was reintroduced. Daraga developed under Mayor Hon. Viciente Jaucian from a third class community to a first class community and now served as a gateway for travelers from the Visayas region to Manila and vice versa.
