Coordinates: 13 ° 40 ′  N , 123 ° 20 ′  E Camarines Sur is a province of the Philippines in the Bicol region , which is located in the southeast of the island of Luzon .

The capital of the province is Pili . Camarines Sur is the largest province of the district with 5497.03 km². A total of 1,756,541 people lived in the province on August 1, 2015. Naga City is the economic and cultural center.

The current governor of the province is Luis R. Villafuerte.

Geographical location

Camarines Sur is located in the middle of the Bicol peninsula . The neighboring provinces of Camarines Sur are Camarines Norte and Quezon in the north and Albay in the south. Camarines Sur is the largest province in the region. A large plain extends here, which is particularly suitable for growing rice. The almost 2000 m high Isarog volcano and the 1196 m high Iriga literally rise from this plain . The mountainous Caramoan peninsula stretches in the north-eastern part , which lies opposite the island province of Catanduanes and separates the Philippine Sea from the Gulf of Lagonoy . North of the Caramoan Peninsula are the islands of Quinalasag , Lahuy , Basot , Basog and Bagieng Island .

The three lakes Buhi , Bato and Baao are grouped around the Iriga volcano . The Mount Isarog National Park was established to protect the rainforest in the province. The Caramoan National Park is located on the northern coast. In the northwest of the province lies the Gulf of Ragay , which is popular with tourists for diving.

As in the rest of the country, the climate is tropical . It is relatively dry between March and May, with continuous rainfall in the remaining months . In the months from June to October the province can be hit by typhoons or tropical low pressure systems. The average annual rainfall is 256.5 centimeters and the average temperature is around 27 ° C.

languages

The most widely spoken language in Camarines Sur is Bikolano . Centralbikolano, the purest Bikolano dialect, is spoken in and around Naga. But you can also meet Agta-speaking people here. Some also speak Buhi-non, a dialect from the Albay province , which is spoken in the southern part around Lake Buhi. Rinconada Bikolano is spoken in the Iriga area . Partido, a dialect of Naga Bikolano, is partly used in the eastern part of the province. Many residents also understand Tagalog and English .

economy

Agriculture is the province's main industry. Especially rice cultivation as well as feed meal production and livestock breeding. Furthermore, grain is grown and some live from fishing. Most of the trade is done with the neighboring provinces, as local demand is limited.
