Gipuzkoa (Spanish Guipúzcoa ) is one of the three provinces of the Spanish Autonomous Region of the Basque Country . The capital is Donostia-San Sebastián . In Gipuzkoa live 723,576 inhabitants (2019), with 1,980.35 square kilometers it is the smallest of all 50 provinces in Spain.
geography
Gipuzkoa is located in the northeast of the Basque Country Autonomous Region on the coast of the Bay of Biscay , which borders the province to the north.
In the west, Gipuzkoa borders the province of Bizkaia , in the south with Álava , in the east with Navarre and in the far north-east with France . The border with France is only ten kilometers long and is formed by the Bidasoa River.
The landscape is characterized by the Cantabrian Mountains and the most westerly foothills of the Pyrenees , which gradually descend to the sea in a landscape divided into numerous valleys to the northwest. Besides the Bidasoa, the Urumea , the Oria , the Urola and the Deba are important rivers . The entire province has a maritime climate .
