The province of Málaga ( Spanish Provincia de Málaga ) is one of the southern of the eight provinces of the autonomous region of Andalusia in southern Spain . The capital is Málaga .

geography

Málaga is bordered by the province of Cádiz to the southwest , Seville to the northwest , Cordoba to the north and Granada to the east . The south coast, the Costa del Sol , lies on the Mediterranean Sea .

With an area of ​​7,308.46 km², the province of Málaga is the smallest of the eight provinces of Andalusia. In 2019, 1,661,785 people lived in the province, about a third of them in the city of Málaga ; the population density was 227 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The center of the province is the capital, an industrial and commercial hub, the port and airport of which are important traffic centers.

Population development of the province

economy

The most important branch of the economy is tourism . Some of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain are located along the Costa del Sol and Malaga airport ( IATA code: AGP) ranks fourth among all Spanish airports in terms of passenger traffic with 11,565,735 people (as of 2003).

Well-known vacation spots include Marbella and Torremolinos , some of which are still exclusive , whose concrete buildings have become symbols of the excesses of mass tourism. There is not so much mass tourism east of Málaga, Nerja and Torrox are popular holiday destinations here.
