La Axarquía [asarˈkia] is one of the six comarcas in the Spanish province of Málaga . It borders the province of Granada . Like all comarcas in the autonomous community of Andalusia , it was established with effect from March 28, 2003. The comarca only has the function of planning regions for tourism and the development of sports facilities.

The comarca in the east of the province comprises 31 municipalities with 211,447 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), i.e. about one eighth of the provincial population. The capital of the administrative unit is Vélez-Málaga .

etymology

"Axarquía" comes from the Arabic aš-šarqiyya ( Arabic ٱلشَّرْقِيَّةٌ, DMG aš-šarqiyya ^do ), 'the eastern part' and this in turn from šarq ( Arabic شَرْقٌ, DMG šarq ^un ), 'east'.
