Moclinejo is a Spanish municipality in Andalusia in the province of Málaga . It is located 20 kilometers from Málaga between the "Cerros de Córdoba" and "Piedra Blanca" at an altitude of 450 meters in the Axarquía , the easternmost part of the province of Málaga.

The area around Moclinejo is characterized by steep slopes and numerous gorges, like the entire area of the Montes de Málaga. The land is dry, rugged and very sloping. The village of Moclinejo is located on the Piedras Blancas hills and opens onto the Benagalbón river valley. It is surrounded by olive, almond trees and wines. Moclinejo is located on "Raisin Street" ("La Ruta de la Pasa") and is sometimes called the "Entrance Gate to Raisin Street". Raisins, wine and grapes are the main products of the area.

history

The time before the Arab rule is not documented. It is believed that Moclinejo is an Arab foundation. The name probably comes from Moclin , Arabic for 'area place'. It is mentioned as Moclinetum, Mohinete, Modinete, Molinete and Molinillo in the chronicles of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Christian troops of the commander of Antequera, General Don Pedro Enriquez, suffered a bloody defeat here in 1482 in the fight against Muslims.

The Muslims fled to a castle and saw their property go up in flames. They came out of hiding and pelted the Christian troops with logs and stones. Alfonso de Aguilar's troops were so damaged that today there is still a gorge in the Moclinejo district called “Hoya de los Muertos” (Trap of Death). After the Christian victory over the Arabs, economic decline began. In the century before last, the economic (re-) upswing was interrupted by the appearance of phylloxera . The area slowly recovered and viticulture and raisin production are still Moclinejo's main source of income.
