history

The 16th century Iglesia de Santa Ana is the oldest and most famous building in the city center. The most striking features are two Tuscan columns made of red marble, the Mudejar-style tower and the Arabic arch that connects the church to the neighboring houses. This creates an entrance to one of the city's narrow streets. The second stop is the Torre de Salazar, which is located on the outskirts on a hill overlooking the sea. It is an Arab structure from the 11th century that was built as a watchtower on the coast to defend itself against enemies attacking from the sea. The last stop is also on the outskirts, about 600 m from the city center. Here you can find the Dolmen del Cerro de la Corona, a funeral complex from the period 3000-4000 BC. Chr.

Trivia

On January 13, 2019, on a family outing, a two-year-old boy fell into a 107 m deep borehole with a 25-30 cm diameter that was drilled in December 2018 in search of water near a house on Cerro de la Corona hill. There were different statements as to whether the hole was covered. At a depth of 70 m, a camera discovered a bag of sweets that the boy had with him. Below that the hole was closed by soil. In a rescue attempt with 100 helpers, a near parallel rescue shaft was drilled through which the child was recovered dead on January 26, 2019 from a depth of about 70 m. For this purpose, a four-meter-long cross passage had to be built under cramped conditions and using microblasts .
