Alhaurín de la Torre is a town with 40,345 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Málaga in Andalusia .
geography
The city is located in the Valle del Guadalhorce west of Málaga on the Sierra de Mijas . Neighboring municipalities are Cártama in the north, Málaga in the east, Torremolinos in the southeast, Benalmádena in the south, Mijas in the southwest and Alhaurín el Grande in the west. The Mediterranean coast extends south of the urban area with the Costa del Sol .
history
The area around Alhaurín de la Torre was founded at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC. Populated by Phoenicians . The place name probably comes from a Berber tribe called al-hawarin , who inhabited the region after the end of the Roman Empire, from which the Hispanic form Alhaurín developed. As part of the Reconquista , the place came to Spain in 1485 and was initially known under the names Alaulín and Laolín .
