Colmenar is a village and a municipality north of Málaga in Andalusia in the Axarquía district .
Colmenar has the typical infrastructure for this type of municipality: mayor's office, police, school from 1st to 10th grade, shops for daily needs, several hotels, a retirement home, health center and pharmacy. The fiestas are very popular in the area. There is a large number of typically Spanish (simple) tapa bars and some restaurants run by the Spanish, English and Dutch. The municipality is responding to high unemployment with a program to promote tourism, especially for hikers. It issues several free maps with route descriptions in the area.
The place name Colmenar (Spanish for "Colmena" for: beehive ) goes back to beekeeping, which previously laid the foundation for economic prosperity for a long time. The seven bees (they stand for the beekeeper's seven-day week) and the beehive have been part of the community seal since 1877 and of today's coat of arms since 1980.
Colmenar can be reached from Málaga via the motorway (Casabermeja exit) via the Vélez-Málaga expressway and via the A-7000 (old name 345). This approach leads along the nature reserve Montes de Málaga .
