Manilva is a city in the extreme southwest of the province of Málaga ( Spain ).
history
Archaeological finds (Cerro de Castillo) prove that the area around Manilva was already settled in the Bronze Age and suggest Phoenician settlements. At the time of the Roman Empire , the then praetor Julius Caesar had a skin disease cured by Hedionda in the sulfur-containing springs, which the Romans expanded into a bath, some of which are still preserved. The remains of a Roman fishing village were found in the La Duquesa district .
The Moorish invasion in 711 AD left only minor traces in the form of a watchtower on the coast (Torre de Chullera) and with the victory of the Catholic Kings in Granada in 1492 , which led to the expulsion of the Moors , Manilva lost its importance. Pirate attacks on the now unprotected coast resulted in a petition from the residents of Malaga , Ronda and Gibraltar to the Duke of Arcos in 1528, which led to the actual founding of Manilva in 1528. It was not until 1796 that Manilva broke away from the "Condando de Casares" (County of Casares ) and became an independent municipality. During the Spanish War of Independence Manilva was one of the few places that was not occupied by French troops.
