Puerto de la Duquesa

La Duquesa is the southernmost district of the Municipio Manilva in the southwest of the Spanish province of Málaga on the Costa del Sol . It is located on both sides of the coastal road halfway between Marbella and Gibraltar , 35 kilometers away.

The Castillo de la Duquesa ("Castle of the Duchess") in today's La Duquesa was built in 1767 by the engineer Don Miguel de Castillo on and partly from the ruins of a Roman villa . The builder was Francisco Paulino from Seville , who had it built at his own expense. King Carlos III gave him as a reward for his efforts in command of a cavalry - company . Excavations in 1989 revealed that an entire Roman fishing village must have been here; Remains of a Roman bath and a cemetery have also been found. Assumptions that the place should have been called Saltum have not yet been confirmed.

Port basin in Puerto de la Duquesa

Today's focal point and tourist center of the place is the port of Puerto de la Duquesa . On the bank of the harbor basin with 328 berths, there are Andalusian-style buildings with promenades, restaurants and small shops; twice a week there is a market with handicrafts and artifacts. There is a beach to the north and south of the harbor; the sandy beach south of the castle is 1,600 meters long and has a blue flag . On the other side of the coastal road, up the slopes inland, is the district of El Hacho with a view of Gibraltar and across the Mediterranean to the African coast. There is a golf club here , the 18-hole course of which was designed by the American architect Robert Trent Jones .
