The Costa del Sol ( Spanish "sun coast") is a coast in southern Spain ( Andalusia ). It borders in the west on the Campo de Gibraltar (Mediterranean coast of the province of Cádiz) and in the east on the Costa Tropical (province of Granada). Outside of Spain, the entire Mediterranean coast of Andalusia is sometimes referred to as the Costa del Sol, but this is incorrect. The Costa del Sol is limited to the Mediterranean coast of the province of Málaga, from Manilva (near Estepona ) to Maro (near Nerja ).

climate

The subtropical climate ensures pleasant temperatures all year round and the coast is also protected from north winds by mountain ranges.

tourism

Since the 1960s, the Costa del Sol has developed into a popular international tourist destination thanks to the climate and the more than 320 days of sunshine per year . Today a large number of hotel complexes and extensive sports facilities characterize the tourist offer. About 60 golf courses were created in the region. The centers of tourism are to the west of Málaga the coast from Torremolinos / Benalmádena via Marbella to San Pedro de Alcántara and in the east of Málaga the coast between Torre del Mar and Nerja .

crime

The Camorra -expert Roberto Saviano saw in 2006, the company on the Costa del Sol largely under the control of Camorristi. In addition to illegal prostitution and drug trafficking , money laundering is mainly carried out there via the construction industry. The Camorristi call the Costa del Sol costa nostra ('our coast'). Saviano attributed the ignorance of Spanish politicians to the Camorra to "a tacit agreement according to which the criminals from Naples are allowed to do their business as long as they do not provoke military action." In the area of serious crime, in addition to the Camorra, there were also organizations from Russia and the former Yugoslavia on the Costa del Sol. In view of this situation, the special police force Grupo de Respuesta Especial para el Crimen Organizado (Greco) was created in 2004 . Marbella, Fuengirola and Torremolinos were among the cities with the highest crime rates in Spain in 2005.
