Costa del Maresme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Costa del Maresme ( Maresme Coast ) is a Spanish stretch of coast on the Mediterranean Sea , it roughly corresponds to the coast of the Catalan comarca of Maresme .

It stretches from Blanes in the north to Barcelona in the south and is densely populated, especially in the southern part, where large suburbs of Barcelona extend. The name Costa del Maresme is traditional, but less known internationally.

This stretch of coast was formerly part of the Costa Brava , which connects to the north. In the south, the Costa del Maresme borders the Costa del Garraf , with which it forms the coast of the province of Barcelona .

The narrow coastal strip, which is bordered by a mountain range from the inland, has long sandy beaches, picturesque fishing villages and tourist centers with a long tradition. Protected by the mountain ranges from the north winds and due to its mild Mediterranean climate, numerous residential areas have emerged alongside the tourist areas.

In addition to traditional agriculture, the textile industry is the main source of income. The fishing of the Costa del Maresme has its center in Arenys de Mar , the main fishing port on this coast. Today, however, hotels, restaurants, campsites and leisure and sports facilities have become the main source of income.
