The Costa Tropical is a coastal strip in the southern part of the Spanish Mediterranean coast ( Granada province , Andalusia ). Geographically, it coincides with the comarca of the same name, Costa Tropical . It lies on the Mediterranean Sea and borders in the west on the Comarca Axarquía - Costa del Sol ( province of Málaga ), in the east on the Comarca Poniente Almeriense ( province of Almería ).

geography

On the Costa Tropical, the foothills of the Betic Cordillera ( Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama , Sierra Nevada ) extend directly to the coast, so that there are hardly any coastal plains in which larger settlements have formed. Due to the protection of the mountain ranges bordering the coast to the north, the inland winds, which are particularly cold in winter, have difficulty reaching the coastal strip, whereas the winds from North Africa easily reach the Costa Tropical. As a microclimate , a pronounced warm maritime climate forms with low daily temperature fluctuations, making it possible to harvest sugar cane , dates , pineapples , bananas , avocados and other subtropical fruits almost all year round .

The rivers reach the Mediterranean after a short run, only along the Río Verde there is a road over the Sierra de Alhama. The Autovía A-44 in the valley of the Río Guadalfeo , coming from inland and Granada, meets the Autovía A-7 , which accompanies the Costa Tropical from west to east.

tourism

The Costa Tropical is also very attractive for tourism , now more domestic than European, as water sports are also possible in winter. In addition, winter sports are also possible due to the proximity of the Sierra Nevada (approx. 75 km, reachable in approx. 60 minutes).
