history

The bay of La Herradura, view from east to west

On October 19, 1562, a fleet under the command of Juan de Mendoza , which came from the Kingdom of Naples and sailed towards Málaga , sought protection from a storm in the bay of La Herradura when the east wind Levante suddenly died down and a strong south wind came up instead. 25 ships of the fleet crashed into each other and onto the rocks of the Punta de la Mona , a headland that bordered the bay. 5000 people are said to have died in this shipwreck, which even found its way into the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes , which was written and published some forty years later.
