Rías Altas

The Rías Altas ("Upper Rías ") are fjord-like bays on the Atlantic Ocean in the north of the north-western Spanish region of Galicia . They emerged from flooded river valleys. The coast is characterized by rocky cliffs, between which there are numerous small beach bays.

The Rías Altas occupy the entire coast of the province of Lugo and the northern part of the coast of the province of A Coruña . The eastern end is the Ría de Ribadeo on the border between Galicia and Asturias , the westernmost ría is the Ría do Burgo near A Coruña . Occasionally, the south-west adjoining Costa da Morte is also counted as part of the Rías Altas zone.

Ría do Barquero

The largest of the Rías Altas are from east to west:

  • Ría de Ribadeo
  • Ría de Foz
  • Ría de Vivero (all the province of Lugo)
  • Ría do Barquero (border of the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña)
  • Ría de Ortiguera
  • Ría de Cedeira
  • Ría de Ferrol
  • Ría de Ares
  • Betanzos River
  • Ría de Coruña (all A Coruña province)

Between the Rías do Barquero and de Ortiguera, Cape Estaca de Bares is the northernmost point of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula . The main ports in the Rías Altas are A Coruña and Ferrol .
