The northern tip of mainland Spain from the air

The Punta Estaca de Bares is a cape on the northern Spanish coast in the province of A Coruña , Galicia . It marks the northernmost point of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula . At 101 meters above sea level there is a 10 m high lighthouse with a range of 25  nautical miles (46 km), which has been in operation there since 1850.

A former LORAN station, which was operated by the United States Coast Guard from the early 1960s, is within sight . In 1978 the US Air Force took over the building and used it until 1991. Since then, the facility has been abandoned and deteriorated.

The cape is the tip of a rocky peninsula between the Rías Ortigueira and Barquero and is considered the border between the Bay of Biscay in the east and the open Atlantic . With an average rainfall of around 1500 mm per year, it is one of the rainiest places in Europe. The annual mean temperature is 13.1 ° C.
