The coastal landscape of the northern Spanish region of Asturias on the Bay of Biscay is known as Costa Verde ("Green Coast") .

Surname

As with many other Spanish coasts , the name “Costa Verde” is not a general or historically common landscape designation, but rather a very recent new coinage for the purpose of promoting tourism. The “Costa Verde” brand was officially registered by ordinance on January 13, 1969, but the name was occasionally used before, for example by the organizers of the Trofeo Costa Verde football tournament (now Trofeo Villa de Gijón ), which has been held annually in Gijón since 1962 .

As green this coast is referred to as in this rainy region with a temperate maritime climate , the landscape is much greener than in other parts of Spain.

tourism

The beaches in the east of Asturias between Llanes and Ribadesella are considered by various travel guides to be the most beautiful in Spain. Nevertheless, there is no mass tourism in this region as in the Mediterranean . Most of the tourists come from their own country for day trips or short vacations. The largest group of foreign tourists come from Great Britain . The hotel prices are normal. Flight connections from abroad to Asturias Airport have only been available for a short time through low-cost airlines. The railway company FEVE operates a narrow-gauge railway along the entire Costa Verde. The A8 motorway connects the coast continuously. However, there is still the problem that there are only inadequate transport connections from the north to other regions of the country, and the transport networks are currently being greatly expanded.

Culture and language

The Cantabrian coastal region has been particularly strongly influenced by the Celtic culture. This cultural heritage is particularly noticeable in the region's Celtic folk music , which is reminiscent of music from various regions in Great Britain, Brittany or Ireland . This traditional music is cultivated and reinterpreted by many contemporary artists such as Hevia or the group Felpeyu . However, a Celtic language has not survived. In the westernmost region of Galicia , both Castilian (Spanish castellano) and Galician (Gal. Galego) are the official languages. In Cantabria, only Castilian is spoken, in Asturias, on the other hand, Asturian is spoken in addition to Castilian . All these languages belong to the Romance language family, but not the others, on the Basque Country have spoken Basque . The architecture is completely unique, and the menu may seem exotic to one or the other. Among the main dishes here include the bean stew Fabada , flat cakes of dough with various fillings ( empanada ) and the cider Sidra (cider not to be confused).
