Trofeo Villa de Gijón
The Trofeo Villa de Gijón is a summer football tournament that is held annually in the El Molinón stadium in the northern Spanish city of Gijón ( Asturias ). Sporting Gijón is a permanent participant and record winner of this tournament with 25 titles. In 1973, with 1. FC Köln , a German team won the Trofeo Villa de Gijón.
The number of participating teams varies between two and four, so the tournament mode changes again and again.
history
In 1962, the tournament was held for the first time as Trofeo Costa Verde . That was the name of the game for 30 years until its 28th edition in 1992. After a year break, the trophy was continued under the name Trofeo Villa de Gijón.
The tournament was also not played in 1971, 1981 and 2009 due to renovation work on the stadium and in 1987, when instead the farewell game for Enrique Castro González , a legendary striker for Sporting Gijón, took place.
