The Estadio Municipal El Molinón , officially El Molinón-Enrique Castro Quini , is a football stadium in the Spanish city of Gijón . It is the home of the Sporting Gijón football club , which currently plays in the Segunda División . It has space for 29,538 spectators. At the end of February 2018, the venue was given the name affix of the recently deceased football player Quini .
history
The Estadio Municipal El Molinón was inaugurated in 1908 and is considered the oldest football stadium in Spain. It was first used for a competitive game in 1917 at a cup match between Sporting Gijón and Arenas Club de Getxo , which the guest won 1-0. Since 1915, the local club Sporting Gijón has used the stadium as a venue for its home games. The club's greatest success was a second place in the Primera División 1978/79 . The club's only titles were five championships in the Segunda División.
The Estadio Municipal El Molinón was one of the venues for the Football World Cup 1982 , which hosted Spain. At that time the stadium offered space for 45,000 spectators. The current capacity is 29,538 after a small renovation was carried out in the 2009/10 season and some seats were added to the stadium, which previously had a capacity of 25,000. There were two memorable matches at the World Cup in Gijón. On the one hand, the then two-time world champion Germany was defeated 2-1 in the preliminary round by Algeria.
Much more famous, however, is the third game at this World Cup in El Molinón, where Germany and Austria faced each other for the final group game. After Algeria had previously defeated Chile, a narrow victory for the Germans was enough for both of them to advance. What followed now went down in the history of the World Cup as the non-aggression pact of Gijón , because after an early goal for Germany by Horst Hrubesch , both teams stopped the game completely and only pushed the ball to each other. Since this game and the obvious manipulation, the final group games at soccer world championships have always taken place at the same time.
