The Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López is a football stadium located in the Spanish city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the Canary Island of Tenerife . It is the sporting home of the CD Tenerife football club . It has dimensions of 107 × 70 meters, it is the stadium with the largest area of the field in the Canary Islands.

history

The stadium was opened on July 25, 1925 under the name Stadium with a game between CD Tenerife and Marino CF , a predecessor club of the UD Las Palmas . At that time, the playing surface was not grass , but earth. In 1949, the venue was renovated and expanded for the first time under the direction of the architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado ; In honor of the club president at the time, the stadium was renamed Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López . In 1952 the lawn was laid out as a play surface and the first floodlight system was installed for two years. In February 1970, the CD Tenerife club finally had to sell the venue to the Cabildo Insular , the regional administration of the island of Tenerife , to repay debt . Due to the sporting rise of the football club in the early 1990s, the decision was made to completely renovate the stadium under the direction of the architect Carlos Schwartz. Construction work ended in 2000. Since then, the venue has had a capacity of 24,000 spectators, all of them seated.
