The Racing Santander team from the Segunda División is at home in the sports facility. There are 22,222 seats available for visitors.

history

The old Estadio El Sardinero

With the founding of Racing Santander on June 14, 1913, the first El Sardinero , which was completed in February of that year, was the home of the club. At that time, the venue consisted of a narrow main grandstand, two roofed back doors and the open back straight. The stadium's name comes from the El Sardinero district of the city of Santander. Racing's old home was just 30 meters from the extensive sandy beaches of the Bay of Biscay . In the 1952/53 season, the club bought the facility from the city for 3.5 million pesetas .

Until 1961, little had happened in El Sardinero since it opened , when a new main grandstand was built. The 80 meter long tier, made of precast concrete parts, had a curved roof structure; which arched over the building. In 1984 Racing sold the stadium back to the city and they started planning a new stadium together. Racing Santander played its last game in the old stadium on May 15, 1988. Racing split 0-0 from Granada CF in a Segunda División game . The demolition of El Sardinero began on June 17th of that year. It lasted twelve days and left 50,000 tons of rubble. Today a marble memorial stone in the Parque de Mesones reminds of the former home of Racing Santander.

The new stadium celebrated its inauguration on August 20, 1988. The then club president Emilio Bolado and the former mayor Manuel Huerta of the city opened the new building together. The home side played their first game against Real Oviedo . The venue is around 300 meters away, still close to the beach. The stadium consists of four interconnected tiers; which are fully equipped with seats and covered. The playing field is separated from the spectator seats by a ditch; so there is no need for fences. The roof of the main stand is raised and slightly towers above the three other tiers. The seating is in the city's colors of white and blue; the masts of the floodlight system stick up outside the four corners of the stadium. In 1999 the stadium received two electronic scoreboards; which were mounted on the roof edge of the back gate.

The club, its administration and a fan shop are located in the stadium. A fitness studio, sauna, medical rooms and massage room are also available. To the east of the stadium behind the opposite stand is a large parking area. In 2003, the multi-purpose hall Palacio de Deportes de Santander with 6,000 to 10,000 seats was opened in the immediate vicinity . Besides concerts and other events, it is mainly used for handball and basketball . In 2008, El Sardinero was renovated after the club won the UEFA Cup . The standing areas were converted into seats and the boxes renovated. The floodlights had to be retrofitted to the requirement of 1,200 lux of UEFA to meet. The area of the disabled spaces has been improved and a players tunnel made of fire-proof material has been installed. The facilities for press representatives have been expanded and renewed. A press room with 50 seats for journalists was also created and the mixed zone was enlarged.

International matches

Six of the seven international matches of the Spanish men's national soccer team in Santander were played in the city's new stadium.
