Football World Cup 2014 / Qualification (UEFA)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The continental association UEFA

The Union of European Football Associations ( UEFA ) is sending 13 participants to the 2014 World Cup . Of the 54 European associations, all members except Gibraltar , which has only been a full member of UEFA since 2013 but not a member of FIFA, took part in the qualification .

The draw for the qualifying groups took place on July 30, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro . The group stage of the European qualification took place between September 7, 2012 and October 15, 2013, the playoff games were played from November 15 to 19, 2013.

FIFA regulations

In accordance with FIFA regulations, the preliminary round matches can be played in the form of group matches or matches according to the cup system, each in return matches, or in exceptional cases in tournament form in one of the participating countries or on a neutral pitch. In the group games, three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. The following criteria are decisive:

  1. higher number of points
  2. better goal difference
  3. higher number of goals scored
  4. higher number of points from the direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals
  5. better goal difference from the direct encounters between the teams with the same points and goals
  6. higher number of goals from direct encounters between teams with equal points and goals
  7. higher number of away goals from direct encounters between teams with the same points and goals if only two teams are affected.

If two teams do the same according to these criteria, a play-off can be scheduled.

In the cup system, the higher number of away goals scored after both games are tied . If the number of away goals is the same, extra time is played. If no goal is scored in extra time, the match will be decided on penalties. If both teams score the same number of goals in extra time, the away team qualifies on the basis of the more away goals scored.

mode

In March 2011, UEFA decided to stick to the qualifying mode of the previous tournament.

The 53 teams were drawn into nine groups, including eight groups of six and one group of five teams. The nine group winners qualified directly for the final round. Following the group stage, the four remaining starting positions in play-offs ( two-legged friendship) between the eight best runners-up in the group were awarded. The worst runners-up was eliminated. In order to be able to compare the performances of the runners-up, the games of the runners-up against the bottom of the group were not taken into account in the groups of six.

Group stage

draw

Before the draw, the teams were divided into six pots based on the FIFA world rankings as of July 27, 2011. One team from each of these pots was drawn into a group. Only five teams remained for Group I.

2 The game Faroe Islands against Austria should have been brought forward to June 6, 2012 because of the climate there. However, since FIFA did not agree to this date because qualifying matches could not begin until after the European Football Championship in 2012 , an alternative plan was drawn up in consultation with the ÖFB and the Faroe Islands Football Association. Thus, the Austrian Football Association started the World Cup qualification against Germany on September 11, 2012. The game in the Faroe Islands was postponed to the last day of the match, the date for the game in Austria was brought forward to March 22, 2013.

5 The game between Poland and England, which was supposed to take place in Warsaw on October 16, 2012, was postponed to the following day due to the fact that the field was unplayable after heavy rain.
6th The game was initially supposed to be played in camera on September 6, 2013 because of the "insulting, denigrating and discriminatory acts of a group of Ukrainian supporters" at the game on September 6, 2013. The sanction was initially lifted as a result of the Ukraine's objection, as no decision could be made before the game was played.
