The Arena Lviv is a football stadium in the Ukrainian city of Lviv ( Ukrainian Львів Lwiw , German 'Lemberg' ). The stadium was the venue for three group games of the European Football Championship 2012 , u. a. the German national soccer team played there twice. It is the home venue of the first division club Karpaty Lviv and temporarily of Shakhtar Donetsk , as before of Metalurh Donetsk .

history

Construction work on a stadium with 34,915 seats began in November 2008. The construction contract was awarded to the German Hochtief Construction . The opening ceremony took place on October 29, 2011 in the unfinished stadium, as according to the UEFA statutes, a European Championship stadium has to go into operation at least six months before the first official match.

From the initially estimated costs of 70 million euros, a total of around 220 million euros developed, which is largely covered by public funds. The increase in costs is seen as an indication that part of the investment sums in numerous EURO 2012 construction projects in Ukraine were not used for construction, but instead seeped away into the contractor's network of companies. The construction costs of a stadium with a comparable construction and equipment should be only a third of the costs of the Lviv Arena.

The venue in Lviv was inaugurated as the last of the Ukrainian EM stadiums. The opening game took place on November 15, 2011 between the national teams of Ukraine and Austria . It ended with a 2-1 win for the hosts. However, since the football club Karpaty Lviv, which was intended to be the main user after the European Championships, moved back to its traditional and for it much closer stadium Ukrajina after just a few months , the arena was hardly used in the following years with annual maintenance costs of two million euros. Karpaty only returned there in the 2014/15 season.

Ukraine crisis

Since the 2014/15 season, Shakhtar Donetsk has temporarily played his home games in the Lviv Arena , around 1,200 kilometers away from the Donbass Arena . The reason for this is the armed conflict in the Ukraine crisis . Metalurh, also from Donetsk, was at home in the south of Lviv during the 2014/15 season, but had to file for bankruptcy shortly before the start of the following season .
