The Alexei Butovsky Vorskla Stadium ( Ukrainian : Стадіон "Ворскла" імені Олексія Бутовського) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava . It has space for 24,795 spectators and is owned by the Vorskla Poltava football club , whose team plays their games here. The stadium's name is derived from the Vorskla River , on which the city of Poltava lies. Since June 22, 2008 it has been nicknamed Alexei Butowski ; after a Russian general and founding member of the IOC .
history
The Vorskla Stadium in Poltava was built in 1951. The stadium was inaugurated on May 2, 1951. Four years later, the Worskla Poltava club was founded and has been using it as a home stadium since its inception. Worskla has been a Ukrainian cup winner once (2009). The club achieved its only league championship when it won the second Ukrainian league in 1996. Worskla currently plays in the Premjer-Liha in the top third and is now one of the top teams in Ukrainian football.
In 2008, Vorskla Poltava moved out of its own stadium for a short time, as it was being rebuilt, and played meanwhile in the central stadium Chornomorez in Odessa until the construction work was completed. The reason for the renovation was the upcoming staging of the Ukrainian Supercup for the 2007/08 season in Poltava, for which, for example, the capacity of the stadium was increased. Shakhtar Donetsk won the Supercup on penalties against Dynamo Kiev .
