The sports facility was opened in 1933. The stadium was badly damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt from 1954 to 1956. The stadium has had several names in its history. In 2002 it was named after coach Valery Lobanovsky , who died on May 13th of that year at the age of 63. The Valery Lobanovsky Stadium offers 16,873 seats, of which 25 are VIP seats and 94 press seats.

The football club Dynamo Kiev has been using the stadium since 1934, today mainly for the games of the second team, as the first team has played their games in the renovated Olympic Stadium in Kiev since 2011 .
