The Ukrajina Stadium ( Ukrainian Стадіон Україна ) is a football stadium in the Ukrainian city of Lviv ( German  Lemberg ). It has space for 28,051 spectators and serves as the home ground of the Karpaty Lviv football club .

history

The Ukrajina Stadium was completed in 1963 and opened on April 18th of that year. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user, Karpaty Lviv , and VMFD Žalgiris Vilnius met for a friendly game, which the guest from Vilnius won 1-0. Since that day, the Ukraijna Stadium of Karpaty Lviv has been used for home games. The greatest success in the club's history of Karpaty was winning the Cup competition of the Soviet Union in 1969. In addition, the club was able to qualify surprisingly for the group stage of the Europa League in the 2010/11 season after having eliminated Galatasaray Istanbul in qualifying . There Lviv met Borussia Dortmund , Sevilla FC and Paris Saint-Germain . In the Ukrainian championship, the club currently plays in the highest league, the Premjer-Liha .

The Ukrajina Stadium can now accommodate 28,051 spectators. In the Soviet era , it even had a capacity of 40,000 at times, as the safety regulations back then were not as strict as they are today. A record crowd was achieved when Dynamo Kiev came to Lviv in 1971 and 41,700 spectators streamed into the Ukrajina Stadium. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the stadium was adapted to Western European standards and the capacity was reduced to the 28,051 spectator seats that are still valid today. Also, it was renamed Ukrajina Stadium at the time after the state of Ukraine was established shortly before. Until then, the sports facility was called Druzhba Stadium ( Дружба , Stadium of Friendship) . At the end of 2011, Karpaty Lviv briefly moved to the Arena Lviv , which was built for the European Football Championship in Ukraine and Poland , but soon returned to the Ukrajina . In addition, FK Lviv occasionally uses the stadium next to the Lafort Arena as a home ground .
