The Oblasnyj Sportywnyj complex (OSK) Metalist (Ukrainian: Обласний Спортивний Комплекс "Металіст" ), called Metalist Stadium for short , in the second largest Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was the venue of the Metalist Kharkiv football club until 2016 . In August 2013, the club took over the Kharkiv Oblast stadium, which had been renovated for € 75 million, for € 64 million . Due to the war in eastern Ukraine , it is the home of the first division club Shakhtar Donetsk .
history
Construction work on the stadium began in 1925 on behalf of Anastas Mikojan . On September 12, 1926, the stadium was opened and was called the Tractor Stadium ; because a local tractor manufacturer financially supported the construction. At the inauguration, Metalist Kharkiv drew 2-2 against Dnipropetrovsk. 1949, named it in honor of the Bolshevik Felix Dzerzhinsky in Dzerzhinsky Stadium to. In 1967 it got its current name Oblasny SportKomplex (OSK) Metalist ; at the time it had a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
To date, the sports facility has undergone four major renovations. The first conversion concerned the west stand in 1966/67. In 1970 the construction of the north and south tiers started and after four years of construction the stadium had a capacity of 30,000 seats. The third construction work on the east and south stands was started in 1979, but postponed indefinitely after the south stand was demolished. It was only after almost twenty years in 1998 that construction was resumed and a new east stand was built and a south tier was partially built. The attendance record dates back to September 23, 1980, when Metalist Kharkiv played against Tawrija Simferopol in front of 42,000 spectators.
After the conversion for the EM 2012
The venue was extensively renovated between 2008 and 2009 for the 2012 European Football Championship in Poland and the Ukraine and has a capacity of 41,307 seats. The south stand was completed and a new east stand was built. The arena got a new roof, which is supported by a steel frame construction and covers all tiers. The VIP area has 438 seats, 124 of which are in the boxes . The floodlight shines on the field with 2400 lux , and 600 workstations are provided for journalists. There are 104 places for disabled visitors, 30 of them specially for the blind. There are 86 commentator seats in the press stand. A new plastic career got the stadium, as well as two video scoreboards and a Bose - public address system .
The renovated stadium reopened on December 5, 2009, on the 50th birthday of the club's president, Oleksandr Yaroslavskyi . The first encounter in the converted stadium was the championship game between Metalist Kharkiv and Obolon Kiev , which the team from Kiev won 1-0.
Kharkiv failed with an application to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in the Metalist Stadium.
Shakhtar Donetsk decided to host his home games at the Metalist Stadium after the winter break of the 2016/17 season . The club, which evaded Donetsk because of the war in eastern Ukraine, is hoping for more support from fans in Kharkiv than in western Ukrainian Lviv , where the club played in the two and a half years.
