Aniceto del Carmen Esquivel Sáenz (born April 18, 1824 in Cartago , Costa Rica , † October 22, 1898 in San José ) was President of Costa Rica from May 8 to July 30, 1876 .

Life

His parents were Úrsula Sáenz y Ulloa and Narciso Esquivel y Salazar. On February 29, 1856 he married Ana Isaura Carazo Peralta, daughter of María Toribia Peralta y Echavarría and Manuel José Carazo Bonilla in San José . Thirteen children were born in this marriage: Julia, Jorge Adolfo, Matilde Adela (Sor María Caridad de Sión), Roberto, Paulina, Sara, Alfredo, Adriana, Isaura, Aniceto y Rosa Esquivel Carazo.

He studied at the Casa de Enseñanza de Santo Tomás and graduated from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala with a law degree .

In addition to his legal work, he was one of the founders of the Banco de la Unión , which opened in 1877. Under this name it issued money between 1877 and 1889, and under its current name Banco de Costa Rica it issued money between 1895 and 1899.

He was a judge on the Supreme Court and a member of the Constituent Assemblies of 1859, 1870 and 1880. From 1860 to 1863 and 1866 to 1868 he was Minister of Government. From 1868 to 1869 he was Foreign Minister in the government cabinet of Jesús Jiménez Zamora , and from 1870 to 1872 a member of the Council of State under the presidency of Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez . In the years 1872-1876, 1884-1892 and 1894-1896 he was a member of the Parliament for San José and 1886-1889 and 1891 he sat before the constituent assemblies.

Presidency

The elections in April 1876 took place according to the taste of the ruler Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez. Sáenz was elected President for a term from 1876 to 1880. He took office on May 8, 1876.

Diplomacy was used to steer the conflicts with the Pedro Joaquín Chamorro y Alfaro government into non-military channels. During his reign, the beginning of the fiscal year was set on January 1st. With the government of Justo Rufino Barrios was Tratado Guardia Salazar agreed.

His political goals differed significantly from those of Commander-in-Chief Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez. On July 30, 1876, he was overthrown by a coup carried out by Generals Pedro and Pablo Quirós Jiménez and Vicente Herrera Zeledón was installed as president.
