UEFA Women's Champions League 2015/16
The Cardiff City Stadium - venue for the final

The 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League was the sixteenth edition of the European championship championship for women's football clubs and the eighth under this name. 59 teams from 47 countries competed for the title. For the first time a team from Kosovo took part in the qualification. The competition began with the first qualifying round games in August 2016 and ended with the final on June 1, 2017, which was played at Cardiff City Stadium .

The defending champions were the women of Olympique Lyon , who were able to prevail in the final against the women of Paris Saint-Germain and defend the title.

Teams

59 clubs took part in the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League. This included the champions and runners-up of the 12 strongest nations and the national champions of the remaining UEFA members. The UEFA five-year rating was used to determine the top twelve national associations . The defending champion and French champion Olympique Lyon, 11 other national champions and 11 runners-up from the strongest national associations received a bye and only intervened in the sixteenth-finals in the competition. The remaining national champions first had to take part in a qualifying round.

mode

First, the clubs from the worst-placed associations played the participants in a qualifying round for the main round, in which 23 other clubs were added. The games of the main round up to and including the semi-finals were played in home and return legs. The team that scored more goals in both games advanced to the next round. If both teams scored the same number of goals, the number of away goals decided. If the number of away goals was the same, the second leg was extended. If both teams scored the same number of goals in extra time, the away team won due to the more goals scored away. If no goals were scored, the match was decided on penalties . The final was decided in one game. In the event of a tie, extra time followed and then possibly a penalty shoot-out.

qualification

The nine mini-tournaments took place from August 23-28, 2016. For this purpose, the participating teams were divided into nine groups of four teams in a lottery. Each group held its mini-tournament in a different country. The group winners qualified for the round of 32, in which the seeded teams and the runner-up intervene in the competition.

The draw of the groups for the qualification took place on June 24th 2015 in Nyon . For this purpose, the teams were divided into 4 pots according to their club coefficient, and one team played in a group from each pot.
