The Hibernians Football Club is a Maltese football club from Paola .

The club has its own stadium, the Hibernians Football Ground , which has a capacity of 8,000 spectators. Not only games of the Hibs are played there; the Hibernians, for their part, often play at Ta 'Qali Stadium .

history

In 1922 supporters of the Strickland's Constitutional Party formed a soccer team that began playing in a lower-class amateur league that same year. After initially there was hardly any competition character, Constitutionals FC succeeded in becoming one of the leading amateur clubs from 1928.

After the championship in the amateur league was successful in 1931, it was decided to join the professional football movement. According to the statutes, a new name had to be found and the club gave itself its current name.

Between 1946 and 1949 the club had merged with the Little Rainbows from neighboring Tarxien .

In the 1930s, the club made it to a few runners-up, but had to wait until 1961 before the first success in the club's history. This title was to be followed by eleven other championships, the last one in 2017. In addition, the club achieved nine cup successes in the national cup competition.

Distinctive stations in the European Cup

In their total of 33 appearances in the European Cup, the Hibernians Paola were able to prevail twice against another team (in the qualifying round for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1971/72 against Fram Reykjavík and in the first qualifying round for the 2002/03 Champions League against Shelbourne FC) and reached the next round once more after their opponent (Olympiacos in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1962/63) withdrew their participation. In the second round of the same tournament, the Hibernians then failed against the eventual finalists Atlético Madrid with an aggregate result of 0: 5, with a respectable 0: 1 at their home Empire Stadium .

They achieved an even better result five years later in the European Cup of National Champions in 1967/68, when they wrested a 0-0 from eventual tournament winners Manchester United at their home Empire Stadium; a success that they were able to repeat three years later (European Cup Winners' Cup 1970/71) against a similarly renowned opponent (the later finalists Real Madrid). In the following season (European Cup Winners' Cup 1971/72), the Hibernians, with Icelandic representative Fram Reykjavík, not only eliminated an opposing team in a sporting way for the first time, but also failed extremely narrowly in the next round (0-0 and 0-1 ) against Steaua Bucharest. After the Hibernians had disastrous defeats in the 1974/75 and 1976/77 UEFA Cup seasons against FC Amsterdam (total score 0:12) and Grasshopper Club Zurich (total 0: 9), they were able to participate in their subsequent three appearances achieve some respectable results again: they won their home game against Sporting Braga 3-2 in 1978/79, only narrowly failed in 1979/80 (0-2 and 1-0) against Dundalk FC and were also able to win in the 1980 / 81 recorded a 1-0 home win against Irish Cup winners Waterford FC. In the preliminary round of the 1994/95 UEFA Cup season, the Hibernians Paola were even able to compensate for a 3-1 first leg defeat at Dynamo Minsk, but then failed in extra time.

The last "big point" so far was the 3-2 aggregate win over Irish champions Shelbourne FC in the first qualifying round for the 2002/03 Champions League. After the 1-0 away win in the second leg, none of the 16 matches played since then could be won and only two of them ended in a draw: 3: 3 against Boavista Porto (2002/03) and 4: 4 against FK Sarajevo (2012/13) .

The biggest win was the 3-0 against Fram Reykjavík in the 1971/72 season and the biggest defeat the 8-0 at Trakia Plovdiv in the 1986/87 season.
