Eddie Theobald
Eddie Theobald (born September 28, 1940 in Paola ; † March 26, 2010 ), also known by the nickname il-Għasfur ( Eng . The Bird), was a Maltese football player who mainly played in midfield . He is considered one of the best players in Maltese football of the 1960s and 1970s and has been voted Footballer of the Year in Malta twice .
career
Theobald joined in March 1956 the youth division of his home club Hibernians Football Club , for which he made his first division debut in the 1958/59 season . In the next 15 years Theobald won the championship title and the cup competition three times with the Paolites .
After the Hibernians had lost the championship to the capital club FC Valletta in the 1973/74 season , the management of the club planned to rebuild the team. The now 33-year-old Theobald, who was transferred to the Żebbuġ Rangers , also fell victim to the sorting process . There he played until the end of the 1976/77 season , when the Rangers were relegated to the second division. At this time Theobald ended his active career.
Theobald played a total of 17 international matches for the Maltese national team .
