Paola (also: Pawla or Paula , mostly Maltese called Raħal Ġdid - "new city") is a city in eastern Malta .
Paola is located south of Valletta and in the immediate vicinity of Tarxien .
history
The city was founded in 1626 by the Knights of St. John . The place takes its name from their grandmaster Antoine de Paule . Paola was only a small town until the late 19th century , but then grew into a residential area for workers in the nearby shipyards.

Sports
The football club Hibernians Football Club is one of the most successful Maltese football clubs and has won 24 national titles so far. The club's own stadium, Hibernians Football Ground, is the second largest arena in Malta with up to 8,000 seats.

There is a friendship agreement with the Italy | Italian municipality of Calcinaia in Tuscany .
