Birżebbuġa [ bɪrzɛˈbːʊːd͡ʒɐ ] is a port city on the bay of Marsaxlokk in the south of Malta with 12,915 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). The name of the city is derived from the Maltese Bir Żebbuġa (German: Żebbuġa-Brunnen). Żebbuġa (Pl. Żebbuġ ) is the Arabic-Maltese word for "wild olive tree". Once upon a time, place names in Malta were often derived from agricultural or geographical conditions.
The city is well known for the fossil finds from the Ice Age in the nearby Għar Dalam cave . The Birżebbuġa parish church is consecrated to St. Peter in chains.
City arms
The city arms of Birżebbuġa shows a blue angle pointing downwards and above it an olive branch on a white background. The blue is reminiscent of the water of the nearby Mediterranean and the olive branch shows the once great importance of olives for the local economy.
Economy and tourism
The “Malta Europort” (container port of Malta) has been located in the south of the city since the 1990s, through which the majority of imports and exports are handled. At the end of the 1990s, north of it, in the middle of the city, a bay was filled with sand, which now has one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta.
Culture
The Birżebbuġa Philharmonic Band ( Soċjetà Filarmonika San Pietru Banda Birżebbuġa ) was founded in 1990 and is an active participant in cultural and religious life across the island of Malta. In February 2004 the band had a performance in Port El-Kantaoui , Tunisia .
