Life

Cachia Zammit was the son of Alfredo Cachia Zammit , who was also a member of the House of Representatives for the Partit Nazzjonalista between 1927 and 1932. After attending the Lyceum, he completed a degree in medicine at the Royal University of Malta , which he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1946 . After three years as a doctor in the public service, he settled in 1949 as a general practitioner in Żejtun.

In the elections on February 26 and 28, 1955, he was elected as a candidate for the PN for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives, to which he belonged until May 9, 1987. After the PN victory in the elections on February 17 and 19, 1962, Cachia Zammit was appointed by Prime Minister Ġorġ Borg Olivier as Minister of Social Services, Labor and Emigration ( Ministru għas-Servizzi Soċjali, Xogħol u Emigrazzjoni ) in his fourth cabinet . In the following fifth cabinet, Borg Olivier , he served from April 7, 1966 to June 21, 1971 as Minister of Health ( Ministru tas-Saħħa ).

Cachia Zammit, who, like his father before, was president of the Banda Beland club , became Maltese ambassador to the Holy See after leaving the House of Representatives in 1987 . In this role he worked to end the dispute with the Roman Catholic Church . This was created in particular when all church property on the islands had been expropriated on June 29, 1983 by the then fourth Mintoff cabinet . His relationship with the Holy See ultimately helped put an end to the dispute, which was finally finally settled in May 1990 by a visit by Pope John Paul II .

For his many years of service, he was one of the first to be awarded the Officer's Cross of the National Order of Merit (UOM) on December 13, 1992 . From his marriage to Doris Martin in 1954, the children John and Kathryn emerged. After his death he was buried in the Żejtun cemetery.
