Swieqi [ ˈswɪːʔɪ ] (or Is-Swieqi ) is a city in the northeast of the island of Malta . Its name comes from the irrigation canals that ran through the former farming land. The city can be reached by bus from Sliema in 15 minutes .
Its quiet, central location made it a preferred address for the island's high society. Swieqi is mainly a residential town, although there are now information technology companies and schools for the English language.
The places Ibraġ , Madliena and parts of St. Andrews also belong to Swieqi . Madliena owes its name to the chapel of St. Magdalena, which was built in the 15th century. Ta 'l-Ibraġ is a new district that has seen its greatest growth rate in the past decade.
The coat of arms contains boulders (malt .: braġġ), irrigation channels (malt .: swieqi) and the Andreas cross. Swieqi also has its own parish council; it shared its postal code with St. Julian's . Its parish arose from parts of St. Julian's, Birkirkara , San Ġwann and Għargħur . The parish church is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. There are few places of archaeological interest in Swieqi, mainly in Madliena: the Victoria Lines, Fort Madliena, Batteria San Giovanni and the Chapel of Madliena.
A partnership agreement has been signed between Swieqi and the Sicilian city of Taormina .
