Marsa (or Il-Marsa ) is a city in Malta with 5454 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), which is located on the southernmost part of the Grand Harbor . The name goes back to the Arabic or Phoenician word for port. Marsa's urban area borders the municipalities of Paola , Qormi , Ħamrun and Floriana .

Marsa is home to the "Malta Shipbuilding" - now called Malta Shipyards . The Marsa power plant is also located there , which, in addition to the newer Delimara power plant, supplies Malta and Gozo with electricity. This coal-fired power station was acquired second-hand by Great Britain in the 1950s , as it no longer met the environmental requirements there. Since then it has been regularly rebuilt and renovated. From 1960 to 1981 at the latest, there was the only car production facility in Malta, the Car Assembly , in Marsa .

Marsa is particularly known for the local harness racing track , the "Malta Race Course", which is located in the western part of the city on the city limits of Qormi .

In 1565, when the Turks besieged the Knights of Malta in Birgu , Senglea and Fort St. Elmo (see also Siege of Malta (1565) ), they set up camp on the Marsa , at that time a relatively flat area with a well .

The local football club Marsa FC currently plays in the second division .

On November 15, 2014, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014 was held in the former Marsa Shipbuilding hangar. One week later, on November 21st and 22nd, the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2015 , the Maltese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , will take place there.
