The power station Delimara ( English Delimara Power Station ) is located near Marsaxlokk in the southeast of Malta and is the newest power station in Malta.

history

The power plant was commissioned in 1992.

Since the technology of the Marsa power plant is out of date, it was discussed in advance of Malta's accession to the EU to shut down the plant. However, part of the electricity production was relocated to the more modern power plant Delimara and the EU limit values for emissions were thus achieved. However, the fine dust emissions from both plants did not yet meet the EU standard.

In September 2008, during a routine inspection, it was found that a small amount of water and heating oil had leaked. The level of oil pollution was a minimum of ten cubic meters of heating oil. Neither the environment nor the power plant or its personnel were damaged, but the responsible authorities were informed immediately.

The power plant has a total output of 304  MW . Two heating oil-fired steam power plants with an electrical output of 60 MW each have been in operation since 1992. The heating oil has a sulfur content of 1%. Since 1994 two gas turbine power plants with an output of 37 MW each have been in operation.

Enemalta wanted to expand the Marsa power plant by the end of 2010, but does not expect the expansion to go into operation until mid-2012.

Six environmental organizations reacted negatively to the government's announcement that the planned expansion of the plant will run on heavy fuel oil.

The total carbon dioxide emissions from the power plant in 2006 were 810,477 tons.

The chimney of the power plant is 150 meters high. It is the tallest structure in Malta .
