Oil power plant
An oil power plant is a thermal power plant in which petroleum products (e.g. heating oil , heavy oil or diesel fuel ) are burned to generate electricity . There are several construction methods:
- Oil power plant in the form of a steam power plant , in which oil products are used to heat the steam generator . Because of the high oil price and the comparatively low efficiency , this type of construction is unusual today; it is only occasionally used as a reserve for peak load times. The oil-producing countries are an exception : here, oil-fired power plants continue to be used for the base load , in the Middle East not only for generating electricity but also for seawater desalination . The local power plant units can services reach 1 GW.
- Smaller oil power plants are operated with diesel engines and have outputs of up to around 10 MW. They serve as an emergency power supply or as combined heat and power plants .
- A special design of the oil power plant is the equipment with an oil-fired gas turbine as a gas turbine or combined cycle power plant .
Examples of oil power plants
- The Shoaiba power plant in Saudi Arabia has an installed capacity of around 5.6 GW and, as of 2013, is the largest power plant in Saudi Arabia.
- The only oil-fired power station in Switzerland - namely the Chavalon thermal power station above Vouvry (VS) - was in operation from 1965 to 1999.
- The Port-Est power plant on the island of Reunion consists of twelve diesel engines with a combined output of 210 MW (electric).
- The Thyrow gas turbine power plant can (in addition to natural gas) also be operated with heating oil .
- The Scholven power plant had each of 672 MW from 1974 to 2003 two-fired with heavy fuel oil power plant units performance. Both blocks were canceled in 2009.
- The power plant of the PCK refinery in Schwedt / Oder , in the plant with three-stage flue gas cleaning , completed in 1998 , the heavy residue from petroleum processing is burned and converted into steam and electricity. The power plant's output is around 300 MW. Up to 130 MW are fed into the power grid. The refinery also supplies the city of Schwedt with district heating.
