The Chavalon thermal power plant (in French, Centrale Thermique de Vouvry ) was one of the few conventional thermal power plants in Switzerland .
Heavy oil power plant (1965–1999)
The power plant, which is heated with heavy oil, is located on the southern slope of the Rhone Valley on a terrace at 825 m above sea level. M. , 450 m above the valley floor, in the municipality of Vouvry , Canton of Valais . The Chavalon thermal power station went into operation on September 22, 1965 and was shut down in September 1999. Heavy oil was burned, which was produced in the neighboring Collombey refinery as a residue from fuel production. It had an electrical output of 2 × 142 MW .
All buildings are still there. The unusual location on the slope was chosen so that the smoke gases can escape better. With a height of 120 meters, the power plant's chimney is one of the highest chimneys in Switzerland.
Planning for a gas power plant
In the following years, plans began to build a 400 MW gas power plant on the site of the decommissioned oil power plant . The new CO 2 compensation law, however, stipulates that new gas-fired power plants can only be approved if they use waste heat ( combined heat and power ). When planning the gas power plant, an exhaust gas temperature of 25 ° C was envisaged and this is too little for waste heat recovery. For this purpose, other gas-fired power plants are planned in Switzerland where the use of waste heat - for example for nearby paper mills or the Cressier refinery - was planned from the start. Because Chavalon is away from the industrial zones, economic competitiveness is a problem.
In January 2007, a building application was submitted to the responsible municipality for the new power plant. According to the building permit, the old plant should have been dismantled in 2007 and the new power plant should have been built in 2008 and 2009. Approval by the municipality of Vouvry took place in September 2009. However, there have been objections, including from environmental organizations, some of which were granted by the canton of Valais. The system is currently (August 2011) in an unchanged condition. A compensation agreement was negotiated with the Federal Office for the Environment at the end of September 2012. The approval process can thus be continued. In the summer of 2017, the project was abandoned for economic reasons and as a reaction to the Energy Strategy 2050 .
Technical specifications
The plans for the new power plant provide for the following key data:
- Output: 400 MW
- Planned operating time / year: 5,500 hours
- Annual production: 2.2 TWh
- Estimated investment: CHF 380 million
- Service life: 25 years
