In Greifswald, as elsewhere, themes from ancient history were initially taught by classical scholars and historians who also dealt with other epochs. From 1857 there were professors who focused on ancient history. The first specialist historian was Otto Seeck from 1881. As a typical “beginners university”, Greifswald was characterized by a relatively frequent change of professorships. The chair in ancient history was not filled again after 1945 and was only re-established in 1994. When Egon Flaig was transferred to Rostock at the end of March 2008, the chair for Ancient History in Greifswald was canceled again.
The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four names the highest position achieved at the University of Greifswald. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an advanced academic career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
