Johannes Engels

Johannes Engels (born September 18, 1959 in Düren ) is a German ancient historian .

Between 1978 and 1984 Johannes Engels studied history, Latin , Greek , Byzantine and educational science at the University of Cologne . In 1983 and 1984 he passed the first and second state examinations in history, ancient Greek and educational science. During this time he received a scholarship from the Gerda Henkel Foundation . Another state examination for Latin followed in 1986. From 1986 to 1989 Engels worked as a research assistant in the Department of Ancient History at the University of Münster . In 1987 he received his doctorate in Cologne, the title of the dissertation was Studies on the Political Biography of Hypereides: Athens in the Epoch of the Lycurgian Reforms and the Macedonian Universal Empire . Since 1989 Engels worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Cologne. In 1992 he was a lecturer as part of the Erasmus program at the University of Leuven .

During the winter semester 1995/96 Engels completed his habilitation in Cologne for ancient history with the habilitation thesis Augusteische Oikumengeographie and Universalhistorie in Strabon's work by Amaseia . Then he was a lecturer in Cologne, 1996/97 additionally in Münster, 1997 again Erasmus lecturer in Leuven. In the 1997 summer semester he taught as a deputy professor at the University of Greifswald , in 1997 and 1998 for two semesters at the University of Trier , and in 1999/2000 for two semesters at the University of Munich . In 2000 he became a private lecturer in Cologne. In 2001/02 he taught as an academic adviser at the University of Tübingen . In 2002 Engels was appointed adjunct professor in Cologne. He was also a temporary lecturer at the University of Leipzig , the RWTH Aachen and the University of Wuppertal . In 2012/13 he was the chair of ancient history at the University of Kassel . From 2014 to 2018 he held a temporary senior council position at the University of Bonn , and since then has been back as an adjunct professor at the University of Cologne.

In the sequel to Felix Jacoby The Fragments of the Greek Historians , Engels contributed in 1998 the works on Stesimbrotos of Thasos , Antisthenes of Athens , Phainias of Eresus and Philiskos of Miletus . Engels is also involved in Brill's New Jacoby .
