Ernst Hohl
Ernst Heinrich Hohl (born April 18, 1886 in Stuttgart , † February 24, 1957 in Berlin ) was a German ancient historian and university professor .
Life
Ernst Hohl, son of a privy councilor, attended the Karls-Gymnasium in Stuttgart and passed his Abitur in 1904 and then did a year of voluntary military service. In 1905 he began studying history, classical philology and archeology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Leipzig and at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . During his studies in 1905 he became a member of the Normannia Tübingen Association . In 1910 he did his doctorate under Ernst Kornemann in Tübingen on Vopiscus and the biography of Emperor Tacitus and in 1911 became a trainee student. At times, Hohl devoted himself to library studies in Rome and Paris in 1912 until he completed his habilitation in 1914 at the University of Strasbourg with Karl Johannes Neumann and Eduard Schwartz on the credibility of the Historia Augusta . He then taught as an assistant and private lecturer in Strasbourg and as a deputy professor in Tübingen in 1915/16 and at the University of Greifswald in 1918/19 , until he received a position as a scheduled associate professor at the University of Rostock in 1919 . Since 1923, Hohl had the rights of a full professor. However, Hohl did not become a full professor in Rostock until 1929. In the same year he turned down an offer at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz , as well as an offer at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 1948 . From 1930 to 1932, Hohl was dean of his faculty. He joined the National Socialist Teachers' Association in January 1934 (membership number 279328). After the war he was again dean of the Philosophical Faculty in 1946. In 1949 he gave guest lectures at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB) and the Jena University, in 1950 Hohl was appointed full professor at the HUB and taught there until his retirement in 1953.

In 1920, Hohl was accepted as a full member of the Strasbourg Scientific Society at the University of Frankfurt / Main, and in 1949 of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The focus of his scientific work was, among other things, the exploration of Arminius . In addition, Hohl dealt extensively with the Historia Augusta , a late antique collection of biographies of Roman emperors. He published an edition of the work and made a German translation, which was only published by Johannes Straub after his death .
