Rainer Bernhardt

Rainer Herbert Georg Bernhardt (born October 10, 1942 in Berlin ) is a German ancient historian .

After graduating from high school in Hamburg, Bernhardt did his military service, which he completed with the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. He then studied history , Latin and Greek at the Universities of Hamburg and Edinburgh . In 1969 he accompanied Peter Herrmann on an epigraphic research trip to Turkey. In 1972 Bernhardt worked in the Turkish archaeological excavation in ancient Kaunos. After receiving his doctorate in 1971, he became a research assistant at the former Department of Ancient History at the University of Hamburg, and in 1980 he received his habilitation. In 1985 he became an honorary professor in Hamburg. In the following years he taught as a substitute professor at the universities of Frankfurt am Main , Kiel and Marburg . In 1991/92 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. From 1993 to 2008 Bernhardt was the first professor of ancient history at the University of Rostock since Ernst Hohl moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1949 . His successor was Egon Flaig .

Bernhardt's research areas are the relations between Rome and the cities of the Greek East from the 3rd century BC. BC to the 3rd century AD, especially problems of Roman imperialism , the Roman forms of rule and provincial administration, as well as the history of Greek mentality and morals from the 6th century BC. BC to the Roman Empire, especially ideas of the Greeks about the connection between the way of life of the Polis citizens and their political behavior and relevant legal measures.
