Karl Johannes Neumann

Karl Johannes Neumann (born September 9, 1857 in Glogau near Posen , † October 12, 1917 in Munich ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

Karl Johannes Neumann attended grammar school in Krotoschin from autumn 1866 to Easter 1875 , where the rector August Gladisch encouraged him to study classical philology . After graduating, Neumann first studied six semesters at the University of Leipzig , then at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . At these universities he was particularly influenced by the church historian Adolf von Harnack and the ancient historian Alfred von Gutschmid , who led Neumann from classical philology to ancient history. In 1880 Neumann was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In his dissertation on the writings of Emperor Julian against Christianity, he combined philological and historical research.

Neumann had been working as a library employee at the University Library in Halle since 1879 . He completed his habilitation in 1881 at the Friedrichs University in Halle for Ancient History and was appointed private lecturer .

In 1884 Neumann was appointed professor of ancient history at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . In 1890 he was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for Classical Studies. In the academic years 1891/92 and 1909/10 he was elected rector of the university. At his second rectorate he gave a speech on the development and tasks of ancient history , which marked the beginning of the history of science in ancient history. Since 1897 he was a member of the academy of non-profit science in Erfurt . He was a collaborator in Paulys Realencyclopedia of classical antiquity .
