Wilfried Nipple

Wilfried Nippel (born January 31, 1950 in Wuppertal ) is a German ancient historian .

Wilfried Nippel studied history and German studies from 1968 to 1973 at the University of Cologne and at the University of Marburg . From 1973 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the universities in Cologne, Basel , Bochum and Munich . In Bochum, he was in 1978 with a thesis on mixed constitutional theory and constitutional reality in Antiquity and Early Modern doctorate . In 1980/81 Nippel conducted research at the German Historical Institute in London , and in 1981/82 he was a visiting scholar at Darwin College in Cambridge .

In 1983 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich with Christian Meier for ancient history. He then took up a professorship at Bielefeld University . In 1988/89 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From 1992 to 2015 Wilfried Nippel was Professor of Ancient History at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He gave his inaugural lecture on Max Weber and the ancient history of his time. Since 2015 he has been a senior professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Since 1997, Nippel has been a full member and deputy "secretary" of the humanities class of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . In the winter semester 2008/09 and the summer semester 2009 he was a visiting scholar at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in Uppsala and was represented by Elke Hartmann during this time . From October 2011 to October 2012 he was a fellow at the Max Weber College at the University of Erfurt . In 2013, Nippel received the Karl Christ Prize, which was first awarded at the University of Frankfurt .

Nippel researches primarily on historical anthropology , specialist and scientific history , the reception of antiquities and comparative constitutional history . He is chairman of Clio-online - Historisches Fachinformationssystem eV He is co-editor of Neue Fischer Weltgeschichte . In 2008, on the return of his 200th birthday, Nippel presented the first comprehensive account of the life and work of Johann Gustav Droysen .
