history
The law firm was founded in England in 1987 through the merger of the law firms Coward Chance and Clifford Turner, whose history dates back to 1802.
The law firm has been represented in Germany since 1990. In 2000 the international law firm Clifford Chance was created through the merger with the German law firm Pünder Volhard Weber & Axster and the US law firm Rogers & Wells . In Germany the firm was called Clifford Chance Pünder until the end of 2003 ; since 2004 it's only called Clifford Chance. The German branch achieved a turnover of 173.0 million euros with around 300 professionals in the 2017/18 financial year.

In Germany, Clifford Chance is registered with a branch in the partnership register of the Frankfurt am Main District Court under the number PR 2189, but also has three offices in Frankfurt am Main , Düsseldorf and Munich . Until June 30, 2014 in Germany the name was Clifford Chance partnership company of lawyers, auditors, tax consultants and solicitors (number PR 1000 in the partnership register Frankfurt / Main). The law firm in Germany is divided into the areas of Banking & Capital Markets , Corporate , Litigation & Dispute Resolution , Real Estate and Tax .
