Mġarr from the south

Mġarr [ m̩ˈd͡ʒɐrː ] (or L-Imġarr ) formerly known as Mgiarro , is a small town in the northwest of the island of Malta . Mġarr is a typical rural community in a remote area west of Mosta . It is surrounded by rich farmland and vineyards. Many of its 3,802 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) are full-time or part-time farmers.

History and Development

The history of Mġarr begins as a rural community and property of several patrician families from Mdina , such as the Vasallo family. Mgiarro was given to the Inguanez family by the King of Sicily , and some time later they sold it to the Falsone family. In the course of time the land was divided up and passed on to the various descendants.

Mġarr has grown quite a bit to this day and is still seen as a rural community with fresh air, far from the industrial centers of Malta.

Mġarr's rural environment includes many rural locations such as Binġemma, Wardija, Fomm ir-Riħ and Ġnejna Bay.

Ta 'Ħaġrat temple complex

Mġarr has two important excavation sites: Ta 'Ħaġrat , which is still in good condition, is in a field near the city center, and Ta' Skorba , excavated in 1963 , is a little outside the city.

Mġarr is popular with people who hike in the area or go swimming on the nearby beaches.

Church in Mġarr

It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Mġarr became its own parish and got its own church. This church has one of the largest domes in the world after that of Mosta . The unique oval shape of the dome indicates the huge amount of money that was made from selling eggs laid in the city: more than 300,000 pieces were sold for this project.

The parish church of Sta. Maria is a smaller copy of the Rotunda of Mosta. Its construction began in 1912 and was made possible by its own work and generous donations from the sale of agricultural products of the community members. Despite all efforts to accelerate construction, it was not completed until 1946 .

The church stands on an elevated position and this terrace offers a captivating view over the fertile fields and the adjacent hill country. Many old houses can still be found in the narrow streets around the church. Modern buildings and a residential area were added later.

Signores di Mugiarro

This title is linked to the area of today's Mġarr, inherited from the Inguanez and Falsone families (Antonio Inguanez, Barone di Ghariexem e Tabia, Signore di Saccaya e San Giorgio) to their descendants. The title Signor di Mugiarro was donated in 1442 by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies "for all time". The first owner was the Vasallo family and passed it on to the eldest daughter and her descendants. Although the British Royal Commission had carried out studies of Maltese nobility titles, it was not taken into account as it was based on Italian origins. The current holder of the title is Principal Giuseppe Said (18th Signore di Mugiarro) as the oldest heir to the former Lordship of Mġarr (or Migarro).
